"I believed the subprime mortgage bonds would be worth less than the CDS on them. So I bought the CDS."- Michael Burry, Scion Capital
Born in 1971 in San Jose, California, Michael Burry studied economics at UCLA before earning his MD from Vanderbilt. After leaving neurology residency at Stanford, he founded Scion Capital — named after his favorite novel, The Scions of Shannara. Armed with Benjamin Graham's Security Analysis and an obsessive attention to detail, he built one of the most extraordinary track records in modern finance.
In 2005, when everyone was celebrating the housing boom, Burry analyzed thousands of individual mortgages and saw what no one else did: the subprime bonds were built on sand. He persuaded Goldman Sachs to sell him credit default swaps against them — and made $100 million personally and $700+ million for his investors when the crash came. His story was portrayed by Christian Bale in the 2015 film The Big Short.
